This day in baseball: Gehrig’s new deal

On February 19, 1935, Lou Gehrig signed a one-year deal with the New York Yankees for $30,000.  The previous season, Gehrig hit .363, 49 homers, and led the American League with 165 RBIs.

After a couple of years with the Yanks, Joe DiMaggio is supposed to have gone to Ed Barrow about a raise. Barrow asked how much? DiMaggio gave a number. According to legend that led to the following exchange:
Barrow: “That’s more than Gehrig gets.”
    DiMaggio: “Gehrig”s underpaid.”
Don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a great story.
